Calendar For Kids – Editable for use with any year

The most exciting part of our morning routine is our Calendar for Kids. We do this every morning – it’s as much fun for my preschooler as it is for my first grader, and because of the way I have designed it, working the fine motor skills is involved – this is something we focus on every day and as often as possible!

At the start of the year, we completed the Calendar cover. It was fun to see what each child came up with, and 100% I will be keeping them and gifting it to them when they turn 18.

Big Brother wanted to became “The guy who picks up poop, just kidding a gardener” (his exact words!) and Little Sister will become “A Queen”… Guess I need to start thinking about relocating to England and somehow acquainting her with the gorgeous Prince George :p

Once that was done, we moved on to the Calendar – we wrote in some important dates (such as birthdays and holidays) and then we completed the activity at the top of the Calendar.

Next came the fun bit. We used dot paints to mark off the first few weeks of the year.

In our part of the world, school generally starts on 27th of January, so it was fun dot painting a bulk of the days.

If you don’t have dot paints, another fun fine motor skill is to use stickers. Or even using a marker to cross of the days has it’s benefits. Whatever option you use, the fingers are still working and the learning is still happening.

After our Calendars were up to date, the kids move on to the Calendar Journal. My son loves shortcuts, but I’ve designed this to teach them how to write the date the looooong way.

Using the Calendar as an aid, they work out the day of the week, the month, the date and the year and color in the appropriate sections. And then there is a space provided where they can write out the date in the correct order by looking back at the colored bits.

As little sister hasn’t yet mastered the art of writing, she skips this bit and jumps right into the weather and seasons part. For some reason, even if we’ve just come back from a walk, the weather part cannot be completed unless they look out the window to check on the sky’s condition… whatever makes them happy I guess!

And then that’s it, we place the calendars back in their plastic envelopes for the next day, and we keep the Journal to look back on at the end of the year so we can talk about how the weather changed over the days/weeks/months.

This activity comes in 2 versions, to suit those located in the US and Australia, and the best part – they are both fully editable, well, the year and dates that is.

January Australia has a back to school theme; January US has a Winter theme – other months have been modified also

You can use and re-use these in your classroom, homeschool or for practice with you children year after year. It literally only takes seconds to fill in a month – that is if you use the tab and number pad on your keyboard. So easy!
