A few months ago, we discovered that sequencing stories was lots of fun. I started off with about 4 stories, then the kids asked for more, and more they got! And now that I have some time, I thought I’d share them with other parents, homeschoolers and teachers.
WHAT exactly is this sequencing thing I’m talking about? It’s the ability of arranging events/items in order; sequencing them. There is a beginning, a middle bit, and a conclusion.
WHY does my child need to practice this? It is a skill they will need to excel in reading, comprehension and writing. But not only that, they will practice analyzing and observing events, reasoning as they think about what comes next and why, drawing conclusions . They’re gonna be using these skills a lot in life!
HOW do we do it? Well, they often “sequence” without even realizing it. Their morning routine, school routines, night time routines etc. One way is to draw attention to their routine. Talk about the logic behind putting socks on FIRST and THEN shoes. Sure, they do it without needing anyone to tell them (most of the time :p) but you are teaching them the thinking process behind it.
Reading or puppet play is another way. Once the book/play is over, talk about what happened FIRST, what happened NEXT, and what happened LAST.
Picture cards are a fun, hands on and an engaging way to practice this skill also. You can make your own, or use my free sample.
In the complete pack I have included 3 Story Boards. A 3-step, 4-step and 5-step board to cater for different abilities. Each board is in color and black and white.
The first thing we did was lay out the cards. 1 set at a time, otherwise it would become overwhelming for them. We started off with the 3-step board and quickly progressed to the 4 step board. We’ll be trying the 5-step board next 🙂
Each story is composed of 5 story cards. Meaning that you will have 1 or 2 spare cards if using the 3 or 4 step boards. Simply remove the most appropriate card/s.
After we looked at the cards, talked about them and placed them on the colored Story Board in order, we also did a color, cut and paste activity.
Little sister wasn’t able to write what the story was about on the line but she still enjoyed working her fine motor skills by coloring, cutting and pasting the cards onto her board. Big brother, on the other hand, enjoyed coming up with a summary for the story.
Currently, we have 15 stories in the pack. I would love for you to let me know the type of stories your children/class would like to sequence, and I will try to include some of them. So please let me know in the comments or by sending me an email 🙂
